Jewellery Care
CARING FOR YOUR JEWELLERY
Congratulations on your Swoon Jewellery purchase! To ensure your jewellery maintains its captivating shine, we’ve outlined a few simple guidelines to follow.
Just like your skin, hair, and clothing, your jewellery requires regular care to combat the build up of oils, moisturisers, and makeup that can dull its lustre over time. Regularly washing your jewellery with a mild liquid hand soap and warm water is the key to keeping it sparkling. For intricate pieces with gemstones, use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently remove any stubborn dirt from the crevices. This gentle cleaning method is safe for both the metal and stones, ensuring your jewellery remains in pristine condition. So long as you use non-abrasive hand-soap that you would consider gentle enough for your hands, this method should not harm any stones or metal.
For a deeper clean or to remove any fine scratches from everyday wear, we recommend having your jewellery professionally polished by a qualified jeweller. This will restore the original brilliance and keep your Swoon pieces looking their absolute best for years to come.
By following these simple steps, you’ll unlock the timeless sparkle of your Swoon Jewellery, ensuring it continues to captivate and enchant for generations to come.
THE GOLD STANDARD
Each item undergoes stringent quality control measures to ensure it is in perfect condition when purchased by you.
CARING FOR YOUR JEWELLERY
Please take note of the following care instructions for your jewellery:
• Do not wear jewellery when doing strenuous work with your hands, like housework, DIY or gardening.
• Do not swim, shower or bath with your jewellery on
• Do not use handwash or expose your jewellery to water
• Do not use harsh chemicals, deodorant or perfumes on your jewellery
• Frequently check for loose stones.
• Store your jewellery away from natural sunlight and heat
• Do not store your jewellery in the bathroom
• Store each piece of jewellery in its own box, preferably wrapped separately, to avoid scuffing.
• Clean your jewellery frequently to maintain its sparkle and beauty . Do not use toothpaste as its abrasive properties can damage softer gems and metals.
• Use only non-abrasive hand soap or good liquid jewellery cleaner for cleaning.
• Please note that SWOON gift boxes are not made for long-term storage as they are not air-tight and could cause tarnishing over time
CHAINS
• Chains are delicate and can be damaged or broken if not treated with care.
• Avoid bending or pulling chains to the point of breaking.
• Store carefully.
• If broken once, the chain may continue to break as the links have been weakened.
• Not all chains can be repaired.
• Do not sleep with your chain on.
CLASPS
Clasps have a spring inside them which will wear over time and eventually need to be replaced. Clasps cannot be repaired.
EARRINGS
Earrings are extremely delicate and must be treated with care. Be careful when opening and closing the earring catch as it will break if bent or pushed open too far. Do not sleep with your earrings on as you could damage the pin.
GEMSTONES
Regular cleaning will help stones retain their sparkle and shine. Clean jewellery with warm soapy water and a soft toothbrush, being careful with porous stones like pearls, emeralds, turquoise, lapis lazuli, and opals. Avoid harder bristled brushes as they can scratch the metal and gemstones. Rinse under running water and dry with a soft cloth. Remove rings when washing up or showering to avoid soap particles lodging in stone settings. Avoid hot water and harsh chemicals that may erode the finish or cause discolouration. Gemstones are graded on a hardness scale, and care should be taken to avoid knocking or banging them. Store gemstone jewellery in separate pouches and fasten all chains and catches before storing flat. We do not offer stone repair services but can replace stones depending on availability.
ROSE GOLD
Rose gold has more copper, so its color changes and reacts over time depending on skin sensitivity.
WHITE GOLD
White gold is achieved by adding other metals like Palladium to yellow gold, then plating it with rhodium for a bright finish. To keep its shine, rhodium plating needs to be done frequently, depending on how often it is used.
YELLOW GOLD
Yellow gold has a higher brass alloy content, with its intensity varying due to copper. It oxidizes over time based on skin sensitivity.
PEARLS
• Avoid knocking pearls on hard surfaces.
• Keep pearls away from chemicals, perfume, and soap.
• Clean with a soft cloth and warm water only.
• Do not use chemicals, abrasives, or traditional jewellery cleaners.
• Have pearl rings sized by a qualified jeweller only.
• Restring pearls regularly, depending on wear.
SILVER JEWELLERY
Silver naturally scratches and tarnishes. Use a good liquid jewellery cleaner and cloth for cleaning. Rinse jewellery thoroughly after cleaning to avoid tarnishing.
TANZANITE
Tanzanite is brittle and sensitive to extreme temperatures, wear and tear, and water conditions. It is better suited for selective wear rather than everyday rings.
TITANIUM JEWELLERY
Titanium is one of the hardest metals known but it can and will scratch with normal everyday wear. As with all jewellery, titanium jewellery must be treated with care.
TUNGSTEN & ZIRCONIUM
Clean rings with a soft cloth.
GOLD PLATED JEWELLERY
Avoid wearing gold-plated jewellery when swimming or bathing. Remove rings before applying hand cream or sanitisers. The dull look of plated jewellery over time is caused by the sterling silver core tarnishing, which can be removed by degreasing with soap and water and dipping in a silver jewellery solution.
